What is the difference between an automatic and a mechanical watch?

Both run on a mainspring instead of a battery. A hand-wound mechanical watch needs you to wind the crown regularly. An automatic watch is also mechanical, but it winds itself from the movement of your wrist.

What happens if I don't wear my automatic watch every day?

Most automatic watches keep running for roughly 40 to 70 hours off the wrist, depending on the movement. If it stops, wind the crown a few turns (or gently move the watch), then set the time and date.

Are automatic watches as accurate as quartz watches?

No. A good automatic gains or loses a few seconds a day, while quartz is more precise. People choose automatics for the craftsmanship, the smooth sweep of the seconds hand and because they never need a battery.

How often does an automatic watch need servicing?
